Game Theory An Artist’s Guide

Game Theory A Guide by Artist Tammy Wofsey

Game Theory 1Were we ever pleased when Tammy Wofsey contacted us about her new book Game Theory: A Guide. Currently her handmade working proof is appearing in an artshow called the Artist and the Book at Pelham Art Center in New York (show runs until April 22. 2006). When the show is complete, she will be printing a small run of 35 copies which will be hand printed from etched zinc plates and a Vandercook press. We were honoured to find out that our book The Official RPS Strategy Guide was used during her research period. Unfortunately, this item, when it goes on sale, might be out of reach for the average RPS enthusiast as the price will be over $1000US.

Here is her artist statement on the project:

Rock, paper, scissors is a childhood game used for helping to decided who should go first. In the adult world it can be used for something as basic as sports or more serious such as business, money and politics. As an artist I use this game as a metaphor for global relations.Game Theory An Artist's Guide 3
Living in New York City affords me the experience of living in a diverse population. I started this idea for my artist book by asking friends, people with whom I work and live if they have played this game in their country. Sometimes a strange look would surface; other times it was easy for them to recall their version of this game. Many times they identified this game with another name or using different kinds of objects. Game Theory An Artist’s Guide 3
During the cold war era The RAND corporation supported by the United States set up a think tank for devising mathematical calculations for trying to decide the outcome of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The beginning for this theory was called "Game Theory", devised by John, Von Neumann.
Game Theory An Artist's Guide3Today the threat of nuclear proliferation looms among neighboring countries. India, Pakistan, North Korea, China, Japan and the Middle East are countries on the brink. However, something they all share from history is their own version of rock paper scissors.
