Back in 1972, the World RPS Society, decided the time was right to expand the Worldrps brand into fashion clothing design and manufacturing. Since their line of RPS t-shirts had been selling very well, it was felt that making a move to more high fashion items would be a short leap for the consumer.

Critics were unanimous in their puzzlement and condemnation which was highlighted by a  New York Times reporter who questioned the basis of the business plan: "Totally ridiculous. What’s next, a record company creating a soft-drink or airline?". As expected, no amount of re-tailoring and redesigning could convince retailers to stock any of the merchandise since it was devoid of RPS imagery. Predictably, the line of clothing was a spectacular failure.

Pictured here is a tear sheet from part of a much retooled sales package that was created to entice the buyers at J.C. Penny to carry the "Men’s Hip-Hugger RPS High Style Fashion" pants. In typical World RPS style, it was figured that buyers would understand that the pant being profiled as (152-2 rev 3b) was ‘obviously’ the one being worn by the winning player. Also, of note is that the player’s throw is a rock which was felt would symbolically contribute to the solid fabrication of these high-styling hip huggers as well as give them a more manly appeal.
